The sport is indigenous to the region and Pakistan has produced some of the most celebrated kabaddi players in the world. However, historically the hallowed akharas and kabaddi training centres have been the sole domain of men. The decision to introduce kabaddi to women in the country has been appreciated so far. However, the sport is yet to take off here as it has for men.

Kabaddi is a high intensity contact sport that requires electrifying energy. Young Pakistani women have now taken it by storm as well. The Women’s Kabaddi Team was formed in 2015. They won Bronze only a few months after their formation at the Asian Championship. Not only did they win accolades, applause, they even won hearts Sarwar Rana, the general secretary of the Pakistan Kabaddi Federation added there have been hiccups, not to mention, resistance from women’s families. Sarwar hopes the government and media encourage this enterprise, stating, “We need more and more young women to break new ground. Pakistani women team beat Indonesia in 1st Asian Women Circle Style Kabaddi Championship. Pakistan ladies got 42 while host team earned 28 points. Teams from Pakistan, Thailand, Nepal, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Iraq and Sri Lanka are takes part in the championship.

Women in sports are breaking barriers and stereotypes left, right and centre. They are not interested in shouldn’ts and couldn’ts, they do what they need to do excel in their careers as sportswomen. These women serve as an inspiration to all men and women. They are kicking down doors and changing mindsets. Unfortunately, the women’s Kabaddi Team didn’t get many opportunities to play in Pakistan. Several Women’s Kabaddi events served as important milestones for Pakistan’s team
